Election Elation

The United Nations and the United States are hailing Iraq’s second parliamentary election as a success. Millions of voters turned out despite threats of violence, and Iraqi security forces spearheaded the effort to keep polls safe. Although militants did carry out a series of attacks, the top U.S. military commander there says that on the whole the country was very peaceful.

Earthquake Rattles Turkey

Another earthquake has struck, this time in southeastern Turkey. The predawn quake killed more than 50 people and injured more than 70 others. Most of the buildings destroyed were mud brick homes. Local authorities have erected tents for the homeless.

What Happened to the Dinosaurs?

Scientists are breathing new life into a 30 year old theory about the extinction of the dinosaurs. For years, scientists have disputed whether it was one single asteroid or many asteroids crashing into the earth that caused the eradication of the species. New evidence proves that just one giant asteroid, measuring 6 miles in diameter, struck the Gulf of Mexico 65 million years ago, destroying 70% of life on earth in the process.

Seal, It’s What’s For Dinner

Canada is fighting back against a European Union ban on seal products. To show their support for local fishing communities, Canada’s parliamentary restaurant will serve bacon-wrapped seal loin in a port reduction sauce. Each year a seal hunt occurs off the cost of Ottawa during March and April, providing a huge source of income for the fishermen there. However, the hunt is controversial and reviled by animal rights activists.
