Here’s a look at today’s top stories…

Not Enough Jobs

Is stimulus money being wasted at Massachusetts universities? Some people say it is and the funds being spent aren’t creating enough jobs. An investigation found that Harvard University received $9 million to create robotic bees and almost a quarter of a million dollars to study Narwhal whale tusks, yet no new hires have been made. U-Mass was awarded $94,000 in stimulus money to study pollen, creating only one job. At least one state senator says the projects are perfect examples of waste.

New Lows

The national jobless rate is down to 9.7%. That’s the lowest it has been in 5 months. Still, 20,000 jobs were cut in January. And, the number of “discouraged job seekers,” that is people who are not actively seeking employment, is up to 1.1 million.

Deportation Decision Due

Closing arguments are scheduled for May in the deportation trail of President Obama’s aunt. Zeituni Onyango immigrated to the U.S. in 2000, seeking asylum from her home in Kenya. Even though officials denied her request, she has continued to fight being deported.

Bo Long

An ancient language has become extinct. The last known speaker of “Bo” has died on a remote island off the coast of India. The dialect traces back to 10,000 years ago and was spoken by members of the Great Andamanese tribe.
