Here’s a look at today’s top stories…
A massive storm system dumping snow, rain and heavy winds stretched across most of the U.S. today. Record lows were recorded in Oregon, hundreds of drivers were stranded in Iowa and a blizzard warning is in effect for Midwestern states. Forecasters warn temperatures could dip to 35 degrees below zero due to wind chill in Minnesota.
Victims of Bernard Madoff’s $65 billion ponzi scheme are appealing to Congress for help recouping their losses. They want current laws prohibiting some investors from being repaid changed. A house subcommittee chairman said the government doesn’t have the funds.
Gen. David Petraeus is warning people to expect a surge in violence as more troops are deployed to Afghanistan. The general also warned that the effectiveness of the troop increase shouldn’t be judged until December of 2010.
Dresses worn by Audrey Hepburn brought in more than $400,000 at auction. The forty-piece collection included a cocktail dress worn by Hepburn in the movie “How to Steal a Million.” Half of the money raised will go to the Audrey Hepburn Children’s Foundation.
