Here’s a look at today’s top stories…
University officials at UC-Santa Cruz are cleaning up after students occupied an administrative building for three days on campus. About 70 students took over Kerr Hall, protesting the university system’s tuition hike. A school spokesman says the students may face criminal or disciplinary charges for the damage they inflicted on the building.
Officials are investigating a radiation leak that occurred at Three Mile Island in Pennsylvania over the weekend. 150 people were working in the building where the leak occurred, and some were exposed to low levels of radiation. Three Mile Island received international attention in 1979 when one of its reactors melted, drawing attention to the potential dangers of nuclear power.
Gunmen in the Philippines killed 21 people today. The act of violence was apparently an attempt to stop a woman from filing her husband’s petition to run for local office in next year’s election.
Police in Norway are hunting for gingerbread vandals. Each year the town of Bergen creates a gingerbread city with over 600 houses made of the cookies. This weekend someone destroyed the mini-city, crushing the houses and covering them with paint.
