Here’s a look at today’s top stories…
Students at UCLA are protesting a 32% tuition increase. The California University system is facing a $535 million budget deficit and claims the hike is necessary. The proposed increase would bring in state tuition to $10,302 at UC schools, not including fees, housing and books.
AOL says it will lay off 2,300 jobs after its spin off from Time Warner is complete. That’s roughly one-third of the company’s workforce. AOL CEO Tim Armstrong announced that he is also foregoing his 2009 bonus, but that his choice to do so is not indicative of bonus payouts for the company.
The Senate has released its version of a health care reform bill. The proposed plan would expand health care coverage to 30 million Americans and cost $849 billion over 10 years. But, the bill could also reduce the government’s deficit by $130 billion over that same time period, according to the Congressional Budgeting Office.
A senate committee hearing reviewing the Fort Hood shootings kicked off today. Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn) is chairing the committee. The goal is to figure out if the rampage could have been prevented and if federal and military officials missed warning signs.
