Careful of your morning cup of Joe. Six people were sent to the hospital after drinking coffee from a machine in a Harvard lab. The java was laced with sodium azide, a preservative that can cause rapid breathing, dizziness and nausea. Police are investigating whether the poisoning was intentional and Harvard Medical School is increasing security.
A dispute over jeans is leading to allegations of racism by some Washington University students. A group of 200 students were visiting Chicago on a senior class trip, culminating with a celebration at a local bar. The bar denied entry to six African Americans because their jeans violated the dress code. A white student exchanged jeans with one of the students denied entry to see what would happen. The white student was let in.
Two deadly car bombs in Baghdad killed at 160 people and wounded 540 others. Iraq’s prime minister denounced the attacks as cowardly and said they would, “not affect the determination of the Iraqi people from continuing their battle against the deposed regime and the gangs of criminal Baath party, and the terrorist al Qaeda organization.”
A new report says the U.S. health care system wastes somewhere between $505 billion and $808 billion every year. Some examples cited in the report: unnecessary use of antibiotics and lab tests, a paper system that discourages sharing of patient’s medical files and fraudulent Medicare claims.
