Here’s a look at today’s top stories…
Vice President Biden met with leaders in Lebanon today ahead of what could be a milestone election in the country. Hezbollah, backed by Iran and Syria, is positioned to take a stronger role in the Lebanese parliament. The U.S. counts Hezbollah as a terrorist organization. Although Mr. Biden said his trip was not meant to back any particular political party, he did say that the outcome of the election could affect the amount of U.S. aid Lebanon receives.
New Jersey is offering out of work Wall Street employees a new job opportunity as math teachers. The program, “Traders to Teachers,” has two requirements: You must have been laid off, and you must hold a bachelors degree.
Microsoft titan Bill Gates says that technology could pull the U.S. out of the recession. Gates says the IT revolution is still in its infancy and can impact all sectors of the economy, “What we can do for education, communication, and what that looks like for the efficiencies of world markets, we are just at the beginning…”
A U.S. appeals court dealt big tobacco a blow, upholding a lower court decision that cigarette makers can no longer label their products as “light” or “low tar.” The court also said that the companies conspired to lie to the public about the dangers of smoking.
